En 1838, le docteur Bruno Danvin décide de créer un musée de Saint-Pol. D'innombrables dons affluèrent de la part des notables. Le musée bénéficizeégalement de dépôts de l’État (sculptures, peintures, collection Campana, ...). La famille de Rotchschild offre pendant plusieurs années des gravures, lithographies, eaux-fortes et peintures. Des tableaux provenant de l'église ou de chapelles intégrèrent les collections. La fermeture du musée de 1868 à 1907, occasionne de nombreux vols. Les bombardements de la Seconde Guerre mondiale provoquent la destruction d'une grande partie des collections. Les objets subsistants sont entreposés dans un local de la mairie, ouvert à tout vent. En 1968, les collections sont installées dans la Chapelle des Sœurs Noires. Le musée bénéficie alors de dons (lithographies de Bacler d'Albe, de Poulbot, de Pignon, peintures, faïences, ...) et d'achats par la Mairie ou par les Amis du Musée. Une section archéologique voit le jour en 1991.
