Le musée d’Uzès ouvre en 1910. C’est un musée municipal, issu de la fusion de deux initiatives privées : un musée de Beaux-Arts voulu par le peintre José Belon, et un musée de traditions locales impulsé par le félibre Albert Roux, sur le modèle du Muséon Arlaten. Tous deux ont sollicité des dons, le premier auprès de ses amis artistes, le second auprès de la population locale, afin de constituer les collections. Entre les deux guerres, le musée connaît une période d'abandon. Il est repris en main par Georges Borias (artiste et enseignant) à partir de 1945 : celui-ci développe les collections de céramique locale et crée un fonds dédié à l'écrivain André Gide, toujours à l'aide de dons, mais également d'achats réalisés par l'association des amis du musée. Actuellement le musée se définit comme un musée d'histoire locale, avec les axes suivants : l’archéologie et l’histoire locales, les arts décoratifs locaux (céramique, meubles peints) et André Gide.
