Créé dans la Maison Carrée en 1821, le premier musée de Nîmes regroupe avec les sculptures romaines et les collections d'Antiques, les premières peintures contemporaines (puisqu'elles provenaient des précédents Salons comme le « Locuste » de Sigalon, ou le « Cromwell » de Delaroche) auprès de peintures anciennes issues des confiscations révolutionnaires. Le projet d'un palais des Arts ayant été abandonné au profit du lycée Daudet en 1883, un musée provisoire est construit dans le quartier neuf de la gare, pour abriter la collection de peintures, devenue trop importante pour contenir dans la Maison Carrée - désormais dévolue aux Antiques - après le legs de Robert Gower en 1869. Ce musée provisoire est remplacé sur le square de la Mandragore par l'édifice actuel, grâce à un concours organisé en 1902. Acquisitions, dons d'artistes, d'amateurs ou de particuliers, dépôts du musée du Louvre portent aujourd'hui à 3.800 le nombre d'œuvres conservées et inventoriées.
