Constitution du fonds d'émaux et de faïences en 1975 et 1978 lors des ventes de la collection d'Huart, ancien directeur de la manufacture des faïenceries de Longwy. L’apogée des émaux de Longwy est atteinte pendant la période Art déco (années 1920-1930) avec les commandes des grands magasins parisiens, la venue d’artistes réputés et surtout la célébration d’une création longovicienne à l’exposition internationale de Paris en 1931 : le vase de Maurice-Paul Chevallier remporte la médaille d’or dans la section des Arts décoratifs. Après une brève fermeture pendant la guerre, la faïencerie rouvre en 1941. La production utilitaire diminue puis cesse dans les années 1960. Elle est remplacée par la production décorative (« fantaisies sur faïence ») et de luxe (émaux). Le manque de renouvellement et d’une politique commerciale adaptée amènent de grandes difficultés financières. En 1975 l’entreprise vend ses collections historiques, cœur du musée actuel. Dépôt d'une collection privée de fer à repasser depuis 1989.
