À l’instigation de son créateur, l’artiste et illustrateur Ch.-J. Hallo, le musée municipal de Senlis s’oriente en 1934 vers le thème de la vénerie ou chasse à courre, pratiquée depuis des temps reculés dans les forêts limitrophes de Senlis (Chantilly, Halatte et Ermenonville). L’établissement, installé dans la chapelle de l’ancien couvent de l’hôpital de la Charité, est inauguré le 12 octobre 1935. En 1958, le musée est transféré dans le parc du Château Royal, à proximité du prieuré Saint-Maurice. il va occuper progressivement à les quatre niveaux du logis. Chargé de son aménagement, le conservateur Georges de Lastic fait réaliser les travaux de réhabilitation et complète les collections par d’importants dépôts de l’État (tableaux de Ruthart, Rysbrack, Desportes, Oudry. Il confère au lieu l’atmosphère d’une demeure privée. Les tableaux et objets d’art se mêlent aux attributs du veneur (trompes, tenues, couteaux) pour évoquer l’art et l’histoire de la chasse à courre.
