La collection est pour la première fois accessible au public en 1842 au sein de la Galerie Mathilde regroupant la Tapisserie de Bayeux (dépôt de l’État concédé en 1804) et les collections d'art et d'histoire municipales notamment issues des saisies révolutionnaires. En 1899, suite à la donation du baron Henri-Alexandre Gérard, deux établissements distincts sont créés : le musée de l'hôtel de ville regroupant les collections d'art, et la bibliothèque municipale accueillant la tapisserie à laquelle s'associent les collections d'histoire. En 2017 dans le cadre du projet de renouvellement du projet muséographique de la tapisserie de Bayeux, est signée une convention de dépôt entre l’État et la ville, affirmant l'unicité de la collection reconnue par l'appellation Musée de France : « Tapisserie de Bayeux - MAHB Musée d'art et d'histoire baron Gérard » (Journal officiel du 10/07/2017).
