Le muséum a été créé en 1819 sous la double impulsion du marquis de Montgrand, maire de Marseille, et du comte de Villeneuve-Bargemon, préfet des Bouches-du-Rhône. En 1869, le muséum d'histoire naturelle s'installe dans l'aile droite du Palais Longchamp pour célébrer les Arts et les Sciences. Sous tutelle du Ministère de l’Éducation Nationale et de la Recherche, le muséum d'histoire naturelle de Marseille a été classé 1ère catégorie en 1967 (comme neuf grands muséums de France), pour la richesse de ses collections. Le Muséum a trois missions : - une mission scientifique qui doit être assurée dans le respect des normes internationales de conservation en tenant compte des attentes nouvelles du monde de la recherche, en veillant à ce que le patrimoine soit accessible à tous, grand public et chercheurs ; - une mission culturelle, par la nature de ses collections, l'architecture de ses salles et son programme ; - une mission pédagogique avec des ateliers, des animations, des conférences et des rencontres pour développer des occasions de dialogues et d'échanges.
