Les musées de Metz furent fondés en 1839 et occupaient un espace de 200 m² dans un bâtiment rattaché à la Bibliothèque Municipale de la ville de Metz. Ils abritaient alors une collection de tableaux que la municipalité ne pouvait plus stocker. En 1841, deux salles furent aménagées pour accueillir les collections d'histoire naturelle. La présentation des collections gallo-romaines eut lieu sous l'impulsion de l'Académie Royale de Metz et de la Société d'Histoire de la Moselle. Elles furent développées considérablement durant la 1ère annexion (1871-1918). En 1935 a été aménagée une nouvelle aile, parallèle à la rue du Haut Poirier. À cette occasion, les vestiges des thermes antiques ont été mis au jour. La nouvelle aile a été construite autour de ces thermes, maintenus in situ. En 1977, le déménagement de la bibliothèque Municipale permit l'élaboration d'un nouveau plan muséographique. Les musées trouvaient leur place définitive dans une surface supplémentaire de 3.500 m². Les nouveaux musées furent inaugurés officiellement en 1980.
