Le Musée municipal est fondé, au début du XXe siècle par Théogène Chavaillon. Ses collections sont enrichies grâce au legs, en 1916, d'un riche amateur, Xavier Auclair (meubles, faïences, tableaux, bibelots, gravures, monnaies, documents). Le fonds du musée continue de s'enrichir grâce à des acquisitions d'objets d'ethnographie régionale et d'objets provenant de fouilles archéologiques. Collections archéologiques et arts et traditions dès 1965. Seconde phase des collections archéologiques dès 1976. Déménagement du musée dans le bâtiment actuel en 1938-1940.
