L'hôtel Biron est découvert dans un état proche de l’abandon par Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), en 1908. L'artiste loue les quatre pièces au rez-de-chaussée, avant d’occuper l’ensemble à partir de 1911. En 1916, un an avant sa mort, Rodin fait don de l’ensemble de son œuvre et de ses biens à l’État français. En contrepartie, l’État devra acheter l’hôtel Biron et s’engager à le transformer en musée consacré à l’artiste. Le site de Paris ouvre au public en 1919. Il est rattaché aux Musées nationaux en 1943. En léguant biens et œuvres, l’artiste lègue également ses droits d’auteur. Grâce à la collection des moules, l’édition de bronzes originaux permet la diffusion de l’œuvre de l’artiste. Le musée Rodin est également dépositaire du droit moral de l’artiste : il fait respecter le droit à la paternité et le droit au respect de l’intégrité de l’œuvre.
