Peintre, sculpteur, et céramiste, Robert Tatin, né à Laval en 1902, s'installe définitivement sur sa terre natale, en Mayenne, en 1962, au lieu-dit La Frénouse à Cossé-le-Vivien où il érige la plus spectaculaire de ses œuvres. Fort de ses expériences, il conçoit et réalise, jusqu'à son décès, en 1983, en mortier de ciment armé et coloré une sculpture monumentale. Il y installe des salles pour accueillir ses œuvres picturales et céramiques. Dès 1967, l'ensemble devient communal et, en 1969, Ministre d’État chargé des Affaires Culturelles, André Malraux lui offre le statut de Musée contrôlé. Au fil des années, œuvres et objets sont donnés par l'artiste à la commune de Cossé-le-Vivien, d'autres sont achetés par celle-ci. Ainsi se développent les collections actuelles du musée dans un ensemble associant le travail artistique de Robert Tatin et une masse considérable d'objets accompagnant sa vie, reflétant ses préoccupations et documentant son parcours, ses rencontres et ses voyages. L'ensemble du site et des collections reçoit l'appellation Musée de France en 2002. Enfin l'enrichissement des collections se poursuit, essentiellement par des dons de proches de Robert Tatin, de collectionneurs et d'artistes contemporains.
