Inauguré en 1969, ce musée qui a conservé sa présentation d'origine est un des derniers à témoigner aujourd'hui de ce qu'avaient imaginé, dans une France en pleine mutation, les historiens, muséographes et ethnologues des années 1930-1940. Il a pour modèle le musée national des Arts et Traditions Populaires fondé par l'un des pères de l'ethnographie française, Georges-Henri Rivière. « Conserver pour transmettre », telle est l'idée retenue par les fondateurs du musée régional d'Auvergne et au premier rang Pierre Sabatier, qui mirent plus de dix ans pour réunir les pièces qui constituent aujourd'hui ses collections. Une présentation volontairement dépouillée met en valeur des objets choisis pour leur rôle évocateur de savoir-faire et de modes de vie aujourd'hui souvent disparus plutôt que pour leur qualité esthétique, cependant réelle.
