Inauguré en 1868 dans l’ancien hospice de la ville, le musée municipal de Villeneuve-lez-Avignon permet d’accueillir les œuvres provenant des monuments religieux villeneuvois (Chartreuse du Val-de-Bénédiction, Collégiale Notre-Dame, Abbaye Saint-André), pour la plupart sauvées des pillages révolutionnaires. Le musée est transféré en 1986 dans le bâtiment actuel. Si la peinture ancienne occupe une place majeure, des acquisitions plus récentes ont ouvert la collection à la peinture moderne : c’est le cas du legs Hortense-Bourgue de 1998 comprenant 61 tableaux du peintre Joseph Meissonnier. En 2002, le fonds se développe considérablement, avec l’acquisition d’une collection de 1.300 cartes postales et photos anciennes de Villeneuve-lez-Avignon. Aux collections municipales, il convient d’ajouter quelques dépôts de l’État, dont la propriété a été récemment transférée à la Ville : des céramiques grecques, étrusques et romaines de la collection Campana déposées en 1875, ainsi que quelques peintures déposées par le Louvre et le Fonds national d'art contemporain (FNAC).
