La « maison des champs » est achetée en 1608 par le père du célèbre dramaturge. Celui-ci en hérite en 1639 et y séjourne souvent jusqu'en 1686. Par la suite, chaque transaction marque l'amputation partielle de la superficie initiale du domaine qui s'élevait à 18 hectares en 1608. Le département de la Seine-Inférieure en fait l'acquisition en 1874, sous l'impulsion de deux conseillers généraux dont l'un (Frédéric Deschamps) est auteur dramatique, fervent admirateur du poète, et l'autre (Edmond Laporte) ami de Flaubert. Auparavant géré par le Département, le musée Pierre Corneille a rejoint au 1er janvier 2016 le Pôle des Musées de la Métropole Rouen Normandie.
