En 1880, la famille Petiet fait don à la ville des bâtiments qui constituent le musée, et de leur collection : copies de Léopold et Auguste Petiet et toiles originales de Marie Petiet. Cette collection est complétée, en 1902, par le sénateur Étienne Dujardin-Beaumetz, sous-secrétaire d’État aux Beaux-Arts, époux de Marie Petiet, à l'origine de plusieurs dépôts de l’État entre 1905 et 1912. Des acquisitions régulières ont depuis enrichi les collections, ainsi que des dépôts de l’État.
