Le musée est inauguré le 13 mai 1960, puis offert par la veuve de l'artiste, Nadia Léger et par Georges Bauquier, maître d’œuvre, à l’État, le 11 octobre 1967, ainsi qu'une collection de 360 œuvres originales du peintre. La collection permet de suivre l'évolution de l'art de Fernand Léger de 1904 à sa mort : dessins, gouaches, céramiques, tapisseries. Parmi les peintures les plus significatives, on peut citer : « La Femme en bleu » (1912), « Le Grand remorqueur » (1923), « Les Musiciens » (vers 1934), « Les Constructeurs » (1950), « Le Campeur » (1954).
