Les deux œuvres de Picasso, « La Guerre » et « La Paix », sont installées dans la chapelle du château de Vallauris en 1959. Le choix par Picasso de la chapelle pour l'édification de son temple de la Paix s'inscrit dans un mouvement de redécouverte de l'art sacré, qui connaît un indéniable engouement dans les années 1950. En août 1952, Picasso entreprend la peinture des deux œuvres. Chaque panneau est constitué de plusieurs rectangles d’isorel, matériau suffisamment flexible pour être ensuite adapté à la forme de la voûte lors de l’installation dans la chapelle. Picasso travaille donc sur des surfaces planes. Après 1957, Picasso ajoute aux deux panneaux initiaux une troisième composition sur le thème des quatre parties du monde se réunissant autour de la colombe de la paix
