En 1818 on consacre le musée du Luxembourg aux artistes contemporains français. En 1922 naît un second musée, le musée du Jeu de Paume situé dans les jardins des Tuileries, consacré aux artistes étrangers. En 1937, à l'occasion de l'exposition internationale, le musée d'art moderne s'installe au palais de Tokyo (avenue du Président-Wilson). Il devient en 1947, sous la direction de Jean Cassou, le musée national d'art moderne, regroupant les grands artistes et mouvements internationaux des cinquante dernières années. En 1969, le président Georges Pompidou décide de doter la France d’un lieu inédit : un centre d’art et de culture qui puisse accueillir à la fois le Musée national d’art moderne et contemporain au rayonnement international, une grande bibliothèque publique (future Bpi), un centre de création industrielle et un centre de recherche et de création musicale (Ircam), réunis dans un seul et unique bâtiment situé au cœur de la capitale. Féru d’art, le couple présidentiel est aussi un ardent défenseur de sa démocratisation. En 1976, le musée s'installe au Centre Georges-Pompidou. Le Centre de création industrielle (CCI), né en 1969 au sein de l'Union Centrale des arts Décoratifs, fusionne avec le musée national d'art moderne (MNAM) par décret du 24 décembre 1992.
