Créé en 1931 par l'archéologue Louis Cadis et Pierre Bureau-Sénac, le musée conserve des collections d'arts et de traditions populaires. En 1952, il est transféré dans la Maison Braneyre, où il se trouve toujours actuellement. De 2009 à 2013, d'importants travaux sont effectués afin de réhabiliter la maison Braneyre et rouvrir le musée avec une nouvelle muséographie tenant compte des normes d'accès et de sécurité du public. En 2014, trois salles sont inaugurées après 10 années de travail. Aujourd'hui, le musée est géré par l'Association des Amis du Musée de Villandraut, qui a pour but, outre la gestion des collections, de faire vivre et connaître ce patrimoine en organisant des manifestations variées dans le Sud-Gironde.
