En 1844, création de la Société archéologique de Sens qui recueille des fragments antiques provenant des remparts de la ville. En 1891, création du musée municipal après une importante donation d'Alfred Lorne. Une aile est ajoutée au bâtiment de l'Hôtel Vezou (XVIIe siècle, propriété de la Ville de Sens) pour abriter les collections qui y sont rassemblées. A partir de 1985, une grande partie des collections sont transférées dans l'ancien archevêché, accolé à la Cathédrale. Le parcours actuel comprend la visite du Trésor de la Cathédrale.
