Collectionneur averti d’œuvres d’art, le Cardinal de Richelieu possède, dans son château de Touraine, une des plus importantes collections de peintures et de sculptures de son temps. Une partie de ces chefs-d’œuvre est au musée de Richelieu. Situé au premier étage de l’hôtel de ville, le musée est inauguré le 25 novembre 1961. En 2011, l’exposition d’intérêt national, « Richelieu à Richelieu », dédiée à l’ensemble des collections du Cardinal dans son château en Touraine, est l’occasion de mettre en place une nouvelle scénographie mettant en valeur les œuvres issues des collections du château disparu, parmi lesquelles six des toiles authentiques de la grande galerie des batailles. Collections constituées grâce à des legs de collectionneurs particuliers, ou des achats par les amis du musée.
