La collection de la municipalité de Château-du-Loir, commune déléguée de Montval-sur-Loir, relève des domaines suivants : beaux-arts (peintures, dessins, aquarelles, sculptures), archéologie, ethnographie, histoire (objets historiques, arts et traditions populaires) et histoire naturelle (naturalia, herbiers et minéraux). Cette collection constituée en grande majorité au cours du XIXe siècle par des achats, dépôts d’État, legs et donations de particuliers et d’artistes locaux, ayant appartenu à l’ancien musée municipal Heurteloup-Chevallier. Ce musée, créé en 1901 grâce au legs de M. Heurteloup-Chevallier en 1889 d’un immeuble et d’une somme d’argent pour aider à la fondation d’un musée-bibliothèque, était géré par M. Rousseau, conservateur bénévole. Le musée ferme en 1968.
