Lillebonne (anciennement Juliobona) est une ville importante à l’époque antique. Elle est le chef-lieu de cité des Calètes, c’est-à-dire le territoire correspondant à l’actuel Pays de Caux. A cette époque, un urbanisme important s’est mis en place avec la romanisation de la ville. Des édifices sont ainsi érigés entre le Ier et le IVe siècles. A partir du XIXe siècle, différents vestiges (théâtre, lieux de commerce, thermes, lieux de vie quotidienne et de culte, nécropoles) sont mis au jour suite à de nombreuses campagnes de fouilles. Le musée, fondé en 1897, est réorganisé et agrandi à partir de 1948. Après plusieurs mois de travaux, il ouvre ses portes avec une nouvelle scénographie, en 2018. Près de 300 pièces de collection sont présentées et de nouveaux objets issus des réserves du musée des Antiquités de Rouen viendront les compléter. La collection de minéralogie est présentée dans l'église du Mesnil-sous-Lillebonne.
