Le musée des Cordeliers est installé dans un bel écrin de la fin du XIXe siècle entièrement rénové, qui offre des espaces muséographiques modernes et accueillants. Fruit de l’héritage de la Société locale d’archéologie et des acquisitions réalisées par la Ville de Saint-Jean-d’Angély, il réunit sur 1.300 m2 de surface d’exposition des collections particulièrement éclectiques, témoins d’histoires multiples. Des pièces archéologiques et lapidaires, des collections numismatiques et iconographiques, de céramique, de mobilier et d’orfèvrerie forment une mémoire unique de l’histoire du territoire. Des œuvres d’art rassemblées par des collectionneurs avertis et récemment acquises offrent un éventail de pièces remarquables, notamment dans le domaine des armes et des arts décoratifs. Un fonds exceptionnel lié aux épopées des expéditions Citroën en Afrique et en Asie – la Première Traversée du Sahara (1922-1923), l’Expédition Centre-Afrique (1924-1925) et l’Expédition Centre-Asie (1931-1932) – constitue la singularité du musée. Des œuvres ethnographiques, une riche iconographie, dont des dessins de l’artiste Alexandre Iacovleff et une authentique autochenille, transmettent la mémoire de ces aventures mythiques.
