En 1917, le fils de Victor Masséna, André, fait don de ce palais à la ville de Nice. Il fixe deux conditions : que la villa Masséna soit transformée en musée d’histoire régionale, et que les jardins soient ouverts au public. Le musée est inauguré en 1921. Sur 1.800m² - 3 niveaux et 23 salles - le musée développe les aspects les plus marquants du rayonnement de Nice, du Premier Empire à 1939. Les 15.000 pièces du musée - mobiliers, peintures, sculptures et objets d’art - forment un témoignage riche et varié sur l’histoire de Nice. Une vaste campagne de rénovation, menée par la ville de Nice entre 1999 et 2008, a permis de restaurer la villa de la Belle Époque, ses décors intérieurs, et de valoriser ses collections historiques et artistiques
