Le musée est situé dans l’ancienne demeure d’Emmanuel Lansyer (1835-1896), peintre paysagiste du XIXe siècle. Entièrement dédié à l’œuvre et à la collection du peintre, le musée ouvre ses portes en 1902, selon la volonté de l’artiste. Outre sa maison et son mobilier, c’est une collection de plus de 8°000 objets que lègue Lansyer à la Ville de Loches : près de 500 tableaux, 2°000 gravures de maîtres, plus de 1°000 objets japonais, de très nombreuses photographies ainsi que ses objets personnels de peintre.
