Le musée de Brive est fondé en 1878 ,à l’initiative de la société scientifique, historique et archéologique de la Corrèze, et de l’un de ses membres en particulier, Ernest Rupin, qui voit en lui « le complément indispensable à l’école ». Données par la Société à la ville de Brive en 1883, les premières collections sont installées dans l’ancien couvent des Clarisses (actuelles Archives municipales) et sont directement liées aux centres d’intérêt multiples des membres érudits de cette société savante. À la fin des années 1970, le musée étant à l’étroit dans ses locaux, il est décidé de le transférer, dans une version repensée, au sein d’un monument prestigieux de la ville : l’hôtel Labenche.
