Construite en 1818, la bourrine est léguée à la famille Gandemer au début du XXe siècle. Armandine Gandemer, sa dernière occupante, quitte les lieux en 1967. A sa mort, en 1970, la ville de Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez devient propriétaire du site et entame sa restauration dans les années 1980. Depuis son ouverture en 1989, le musée de la bourrine du bois Juquaud ne cesse de s’interroger sur lui-même. Comment, demain transmettre et valoriser les richesses patrimoniales, matérielles comme immatérielles, qui y sont conservées ? C’est tout l’objet de sa prochaine transformation. Grâce à l’engagement de la ville de Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez et de l’association Les Amis de la bourrine du bois Juquaud, le musée est l’héritier de collections, de savoir-faire et de traditions qu’il se doit de conserver, d’enrichir, de valoriser, d’animer et d’exposer. Un nouveau projet scientifique et culturel a été validé en 2017, qui devra permette au musée de valoriser le mode de vie des maraîchins, en faisant écho aux enjeux contemporains : cycle des saisons, ressources relevant du territoire, architecture de terre et de roseaux ; de remettre de l’intime au cœur du parcours en illustrant la vie de la dernière occupante ; de placer le musée comme acteur d’interprétation du paysage.
