Le fonds du musée est constitué par les collections réunies par le journaliste et historien, Joseph Denais, au cours de sa vie, ses recherches autour des bâtiments de la ville, les objets ramenés de ses voyages... Une partie de sa collection est offerte à la Ville dès 1894. Très attaché à sa ville, il sollicite les dons d'artistes contemporains, d'archéologues et de collectionneurs célèbres. La présentation des collections, telle que l'organisa Joseph Denais, n'a pratiquement pas changé depuis 1905, ce qui fait de ce musée un lieu unique, dernier témoin du musée du XIXe siècle. Par la variété de ses collections et l'originalité du bâtiment, le musée Joseph Denais est régulièrement qualifié de cabinet de curiosités. Aujourd'hui, plus de 9.000 numéros sont répertoriés dans l'inventaire.
