Ouvert en 1990, le musée recrée par le biais d'une approche pluridisciplinaire - historique, littéraire et artistique - toute une époque de l'avant-guerre à la Libération. Une collection de plus de 10.000 pièces, objets et documents, évoque, dans des décors cinématographiques inspirés du réalisme poétique, la vie quotidienne des Français sous l'occupation, puis une présentation de la Résistance en Vaucluse, au sein de la geste nationale, appréhende, à travers le récit et les témoignages des acteurs de l'événement, les motivations profondes des comportements ; enfin une troisième section : « La liberté de l'Esprit » propose une réflexion en profondeur sur « l'intelligence en guerre », les idéaux de la Résistance, leur enseignement et leur signification.
