Créé en 1934 par la veuve du peintre Ernest Hébert, le musée Hébert est installé au sein de la propriété ayant appartenu au peintre et à sa famille. En 1979, le domaine, l'ensemble des bâtiments et des collections constituant le musée Hébert ont été donnés au Conseil général de l'Isère. Le musée a dès lors affiché une double orientation : favoriser une meilleure connaissance de l'art du XIXe siècle à travers les collections du peintre Ernest Hébert, et promouvoir des artistes contemporains, jeunes ou confirmés.
