La vie de Gustave Moreau (1826-1898) est celle d'un artiste de la bourgeoisie parisienne aisée. Il fait de solides études classiques et sa vocation artistique est encouragée par un père cultivé : formation à l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, voyage en Italie, études des grands maîtres de la Renaissance a Louvre. Cette maison est achetée pour l'artiste, par ses parents. En 1862, il songe à y conserver ses œuvres de la dispersion. En 1895, il fait agrandir la maison et édifier par l'architecte Albert Lafon les grands ateliers des deuxième et troisième étages, afin d'y présenter des tableaux des aquarelles, des dessins et des ébauches. A partir de 1892, il enseigne à l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts où il a pour élèves, Matisse, Rouault, Marquet. Par testament, Gustave Moreau lègue à l'Etat la demeure avec tout ce qu'elle contient, soit 800 peintures, 350 aquarelles, 5.000 dessins.
