Fondé par Georges Labit, grand voyageur et amateur passionné de témoignages de civilisations peu connues, notamment d'Asie. Dès 1879, Labit entreprend ses premiers voyages, d’abord à travers l’Europe, de l’Italie à la Norvège, poussant même jusqu’à la Laponie, une région rarement visitée à l’époque. Il parcourt également l’Afrique du Nord, rassemblant ses premières collections. En 1889, il s’embarque à Marseille pour un voyage décisif qui le mène, par le canal de Suez, jusqu’en Asie. La Chine et le Japon le marquent profondément. Passionné d’ethnologie, d’histoire de l’art et d’histoire des religions, il choisit ses acquisitions sans a priori, mêlant œuvres d’arts et objets plus modestes, témoins de la vie des populations locales. Le musée et ses collections furent légués en 1913 à la ville de Toulouse par son père. Apports ultérieurs de plusieurs collectionneurs, acquisitions des conservateurs successifs et dépôts du musée national des arts asiatiques Guimet.
