Les premières collections sont regroupées par le comte de Taillefer, qui les publie partiellement, en 1821 et 1826, dans les deux volumes de son ouvrage « Les antiquités de Vésone ». Les collections anciennes de Vesunna figurent dans les registres manuscrits et catalogues publiés du musée archéologique du département de la Dordogne (créé en 1835), puis du musée du Périgord qui lui a succédé. Elles sont enrichies, pour l'ouverture du musée, des fonds issus des fouilles de Périgueux depuis les années 1960. Elles sont la propriété de la Ville de Périgueux. Certains ensembles sont des dépôts de l’État (Service régional de l’archéologie, Aquitaine) ainsi que, pour certains, de l’Office municipal de H.L.M. Ils proviennent de 18 fouilles de sauvetage archéologique réalisées à Périgueux entre 1980 et 1996. Depuis son ouverture en 2003, le musée gallo-romain de Périgueux regroupe des collections archéologiques provenant de Périgueux ou de la Dordogne.
