Créé en 1901, le musée Flaubert et d'histoire de la médecine regroupe d'abord une collection de pots d'apothicaire de la pharmacie Mésaize ainsi que divers objets médicaux et paramédicaux offerts par des médecins. Installé dans un premier temps dans la bibliothèque de l’École de médecine et de pharmacie de Rouen, le musée est rapidement transféré dans les services de la clinique de l'Hôtel-Dieu. En 1923 la chambre natale de Gustave Flaubert, né le 12 décembre 1821, est réhabilitée. Mais ce n'est qu'en 1947, avec l'installation dans le pavillon du chirurgien, que le musée prend sa forme actuelle. Aujourd'hui le musée Flaubert et d'histoire de la médecine, maison natale de Gustave Flaubert, fait partie des musées littéraires de la Métropole Rouen Normandie.
