Créé en 1837 par la Société des lettres, sciences et arts de l'Aveyron, le musée Fenaille s'est enrichi grâce à la générosité de ses membres jusque vers 1880-1890. Les dons recueillis entre la seconde moitié du XIXe et 1930-1950 concernent surtout les sciences de la nature et l'ethnographie non européenne, les objets d'art, la numismatique, l'archéologie régionale et locale (vestiges de Segodunum, capitale de la cité des Ruthènes). Les peintures, dont de nombreux dépôts de l’État, sont conservées au musée des beaux-arts Denys-Puech. La sculpture régionale comporte de belles pièces du Moyen Âge. Le musée conserve une collection emblématique de statues-menhirs.
