Le musée du Touquet Paris-Plage est inauguré le 9 juillet 1932, premier jour des fêtes commémorant le cinquantenaire de la station balnéaire. D'abord installé à l'hôtel de ville, il voit le jour grâce à l'action de la Société académique, ainsi que de donateurs et de prêteurs. Le projet est mené à bien par Édouard Champion, adjoint au maire, qui en devient le premier conservateur. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les collections sont cachées derrière un faux mur dans le sous-sol de l'hôtel de ville. Le bâtiment est endommagé et il faut attendre 1963 pour que le musée ouvre à nouveau ses portes. En 1989, il est installé dans un lieu à sa mesure, la villa Way Side. Sous la direction de Jean Couppé-Jacquart et dans le cadre du syndicat intercommunal à vocations multiples (SIVOM), le musée s'installe dans ses nouveaux locaux où, en 1991, est présentée une collection nouvellement dédiée à la création contemporaine. En 1996, le musée redevient communal.
