Le musée est fondé en 1905 par A. Reusch et installé dans la chapelle désaffectée des Cordeliers. Les premières collections comportent principalement des objets provenant des découvertes archéologiques d'un vaste territoire autour de Sarrebourg. Les thématiques se sont progressivement étendues à l'histoire locales, aux beaux-arts et aux arts décoratifs (collection importante consacrée à la manufacture de Niderviller).
