Un premier musée est créé à Lavaur en 1898, au sein de l'hôtel de ville. Il bénéficie alors de quelques dépôts de l’État. Abandonné, il est relancé en 1952 par la Société Archéologique de Lavaur et dénommé musée du Pays Vaurais. Situé dans une très belle chapelle du XVIIe siècle, rue de la Mairie, le musée s'enrichit de nombreux dons et dépôts. En 2002, l'établissement semi-associatif devient définitivement municipal. En 2001, la ville de Lavaur a fait l'acquisition d'un ancien monastère, dans le but d'y créer un vaste pôle culturel regroupant, à terme, une médiathèque, un centre d'archives anciennes et un musée. Ancienne chapelle du monastère, la salle d'exposition temporaire du musée accueille, depuis 2002, deux grandes manifestations annuelles et de nombreuses expositions temporaires tout au long de l'année. Le musée étant en restructuration, les collections permanentes ne sont pas visibles.
