Les saisies révolutionnaires provenant de l'abbaye bénédictine de Saint-Winoc, et des autres couvents de la ville, forment le fonds primitif du musée. Seule échappe au pillage une partie de ces collections Installées de façon précaire dans des locaux de fortune. A partir de 1842, la municipalité entreprend de sauvegarder les collections et les abrite dans le collège des Jésuites, puis à l'hôtel de ville. Ces collections, enrichies de dons et d'acquisition, sont transférées, après la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, dans l'ancien Mont-de-Piété.
