Fondé en 1968, ce musée réintégre une partie des collections (chefs-d’œuvre de compagnons, tableaux) de l'ancien « musée Compagnonnique » fondé en 1911 et qui appartenaient et appartiennent aux sociétés de compagnonnage : l'association ouvrière des Compagnons du Devoir, la Fédération compagnonnique des Métiers du Bâtiment et l'Union compagnonnique des Devoirs unis. A ce fonds se sont adjoints d'autres dépôts en provenance de musées et de nombreux dons des particuliers.
