Accolé à la façade nord de l'église de Notre-Dame-en-Vaux, monument inscrit au Patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco, le cloître a été édifié dans les années 1170-1180. Détruit en 1759 et 1766 par les chanoines et les paroissiens qui ne voulaient plus payer les réparations, il tombe dans l'oubli pendant deux siècles. Les fouilles entreprises par Léon Pressouyre entre 1963 et 1976 permettent de mettre au jour les trois-quarts des éléments du cloître. Elles révèlent un édifice d'une exceptionnelle richesse iconographique et d'une grande somptuosité décorative qui constitue un monument majeur de l'histoire de la sculpture à cette époque de transition entre Roman et Gothique.
