Jusqu'en 2016, le Château-musée Henri IV présentait l'histoire du territoire par le biais de deux thématiques : l'archéologie et la période Renaissance. En 2016, les collections archéologiques ont été retirées de la muséographie, à la fois pour des raisons de conservation mais aussi pour répondre davantage à la demande du public. Ces collections sont désormais conservées au réserve, en attendant de leur trouver une place où elles seront à nouveau mises en valeur. Depuis, le Château, ancienne demeure des seigneurs d'Albret, est entièrement tourné vers son histoire et ses occupants. Le visiteur peut donc appréhender l'histoire de la Renaissance et des rois de Navarre. La collection est en grande partie municipale. Elle a été enrichie par des dépôts au fil des années. L’essentiel des collections Beaux-arts est composé de dépôts de l’État, mais aussi de musées de collectivités (musée Paul Dupuy de Toulouse, musée Massey de Tarbes, écomusée du marais Vendéen).
