Les collections sont constituées, à partir des années 1940, par Jacques Monthulé, agriculteur au Mesnilbu. J. Monthulé fonde en 1976, avec Jean de Saint-Jorre, une association de sauvegarde du patrimoine agricole et rural « La Normandie traditionnelle », qui permet d'enrichir les collections d'environ 500 pièces supplémentaires. Les collections réunies par « La Normandie traditionnelle » sont offertes à la ville et les collections de J. Monthulé (environ 900 objets) sont achetées par la Ville avec l'aide du fonds régional d'acquisition pour les musées (FRAM). Actuellement, les collections comptent plus de 4.000 objets et documents. Le musée est installé dans ces bâtiments depuis 1989. Rénové de décembre 2000 à juin 2004, il est doté d'une scénographie contemporaine et interactive pour traiter de l'histoire et de l'ethnographie du Bocage normand, des années 1800 à nos jours.
