Le musée est créé en 1938 par François Cochat grâce à la générosité des habitants de la région et dans le but de préserver les costumes, drapeaux et armes réunis lors du centenaire de la création de la compagnie des sapeurs pompiers de Thônes. Endommagé par le bombardement d’août 1944, rénové en 1982, il retrace sur deux étages l'histoire de la vallée depuis les premiers campements préhistoriques jusqu'à nos jours, ses costumes, son artisanat et son folklore.
