Mars 1957 : un groupe d'amateurs de transports se cotisent pour acheter la motrice n°1 des tramways de Versailles. Ils fondent l'AMTUIR (association pour le musée des transports urbains, interurbains et ruraux) et décident de constituer un musée national des transports urbains. D'abord par achats, par récupération d'épaves, puis par dons, l'AMTUIR réunit à ce jour une collection de 150 véhicules représentative des différentes technologies, de toute la France avec quelques représentations étrangères. Le musée est ouvert à certains occasions (Journées du Patrimoine...).
