Les collections sont réunies en 1942 par un groupe de défenseurs des traditions camarguaises. A la suite du désir de la municipalité de remettre en valeur ses collections autour du marquis de Baroncelli, ainsi que son passé et son histoire maritime la plus reculée, une nouvelle structure est bâtie : le musée des Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. C’est ainsi que ce dernier hérite des anciennes collections du Musée Baroncelli, aujourd’hui fermé, et présente également un parcours consacré à l’archéologie sous-marine et au patrimoine maritime du littoral camarguais de l'Antiquité jusqu’à l’époque moderne et contemporaine
