Le musée des Instruments à vent est créé en 1888 par les ouvriers finisseurs en instruments de musique de La Couture-Boussey. En fondant le premier musée de facture instrumentale en France, ils ont l'ambition de conserver et de mettre en valeur l'histoire de la fabrication locale des instruments de musique de la famille des bois, depuis le XVIIe siècle : des flûtes, hautbois et clarinettes anciens et modernes sont collectés auprès des facteurs locaux, et des copies d'instruments célèbres (Hotteterre, Rafi) sont fabriquées afin de présenter de façon exhaustive l'évolution de cette famille d'instruments depuis le XVIIIe siècle. Les collections sont alors hébergées dans une salle de la mairie. L'enrichissement des collections instrumentales se poursuit lentement jusque dans les années 1930, avant que le musée ne connaisse une période de sommeil. Il renoue avec le public le 6 juin 1982, date de son inauguration dans les locaux qui l'hébergent aujourd'hui.
