Sign inLe musée, créé en 1801, présentait à l'origine des œuvres confisquées pendant la Révolution, auxquels s'ajoutèrent 110 tableaux, envois de l'Etat de 1803 à 1811. François Artaud, archéologue et premier conservateur du musée, fonda le département des antiquités nationales, grecques, égyptiennes. Avant d'être un musée des beaux-Arts généraliste, le musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon a notamment été un lieu d'apprentissage pour les dessinateurs employés par la Fabrique lyonnaise, et notamment de motifs floraux. A partir de 1969, le musée reçut les collections d'égyptologie du musée Guimet, tandis que les collections gallo-romaines furent transférées au musée de la Civilisation gallo-romaine de Lyon. Le musée comprend actuellement cinq départements : antiquités, objets d'art, arts graphiques, peintures, sculptures. Il a été entièrement rénové en 1998.
