Le musée des Beaux-Arts, par le biais de la société des amis des arts, a commencé à constituer ses collections dès 1841, grâce à des achats, des legs ou des dons. Peintures (au nombre de de 900), objets d’arts, sculptures, arts graphiques, objets militaires ou encore collections ethnographiques extra-européennes, nombreuses sont les collections qui retracent les siècles d’ici ou d’ailleurs. L’une des particularités du musée est son importante collection d’œuvres qui ne pouvaient être exposées qu’à 10%, faute de place. Ce problème s’est alors transformé en point fort, avec la politique annuelle innovante « accrochages » qui permettait à un groupe de citoyens de choisir des œuvres à exposer durant l’année. Gagner des mètres carrés est un des enjeux parmi d’autres de la future rénovation.
